About this Course

Course 640: The D.O.T. Process - Simplified for Electric Utilities – 2 days

Who should attend: Staking/Field Technicians; Distribution Line Workers; Designers; Engineers; Utility Managers; Engineering Managers; System Engineers, Operations Managers; Safety Managers; Communication Line Workers; and Electric Utility Contractors.

Pre-requisite: 3-6 mos.working experience in or with electric utilities

Hours: 14    CEUs: 1.4 (PDHs: 14)

One of the most challenging aspects of a highway relocation project is the coordination of communication and planning between the state department of transportation (D.O.T.) and Electric Utilities. Each state D.O.T. - as well as each Electric Utility - follows its own processes and procedures for relocations, creating much room for miscommunication and costly project delays. This 2-day overview and workshop focuses on highway relocations and unique issues electric utility personnel face working with their state department of transportation. Attendees will be shown how to read a set of D.O.T. plans and will discuss the D.O.T. process in general (some of the similarities and differences from state to state). Attendees will get an overview of typical Electric Utility and D.O.T. responsibilities. Tips will be given on how to avoid some of the more common "pitfalls" when working with the State D.O.T. on these projects. Attendees will also review actual sets of D.O.T. plans and will be given opportunity to work through various stages of a highway widening project and propose solutions for several challenges presented along the way. Course handbook provided.
