About this Course

Pre-requisite: Successful completion of Power Line Design & Staking, Levels 1 & 2

In Level 3 Power Line Design and Staking, students will build on the foundation created in the prerequisite courses, Levels 1 and 2 and are introduced to underground line design. Attention is given to understanding how to apply the theories of line design to solve special problems. After completion of this course, participants will be able complete the layout and design of most overhead and underground projects. Students will also understand the physical loads on the distribution system and the associated hardware, read DOT projects, class poles, design for special guying situations, calculate sag and create a stringing chart, and estimate sag on uneven terrain.

UTS will provide course handbook, and other miscellaneous worksheets and supplies required for this course. This course packet will be mailed to students 1 week prior to course start date. Students need to have access to their own copy of the current, 2023 National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) book.

A UTS instructor will deliver this course via WebEx platform. Daily web attendance required.
Course Process & Requirements
User/System requirements:
Desktop or Laptop
Internet - a 6mbps Internet connection (or as close to that as possible) works best.
Webcam and mic are recommended, but not required (online chat will be available).Student
Attendance: Students will be required to log in and participate during both training session days. 10-minute breaks will be given every hour and a 1-hour lunch break will be given at noon each day.
We will be using the Webex platform for this virtual course. Students will receive an email invitation to join a the training session prior to class start times. This email will include a link that students will use to join the training session through web browser or by downloading the app.
The course final exam will be taken online (not virtual) and will be available through our eLearning site the following week. Students will receive this information during the virtual session. The final exam will require a proctor, so students will need to schedule the exam with a proctor. Proctor information will be collected during the virtual session. Final exam access codes will be sent to proctors upon completion of the virtual session.
Grading – Course is a Pass/Retake based on final exam score (70 or better). Course certificates will be mailed upon successful completion of final exam.

Deadline for registration is January 19, 2024. Registrations will be confirmed via email, but participants are not guaranteed space in the class until payment is received. Thank you!
Cancellations/No Shows/Substitutions
Registrants who cancel in writing on or before January 19, 2024 are entitled to a full refund of their registration fee. Registrants who cancel after January 19, 2024 will not receive a refund, but participant substitutions will be allowed for this event only. Registrants and no-shows who do not cancel by January 19, 2024 are responsible for the full registration.
